Today I had a visit from a friend and her 13 year old son Rhys, a great little kid who was born with severe disabilities, he doesn’t have a lot of mobility and he can’t talk but he is very expressive just the same. I asked if they wanted to come and meet my horse Winnie. When Winnie met Rhys she was so taken by him.

No need for words
He was on one side of the round yard fence and she was on the other, she put her head down and sniffed him, then she put her head on the side and got between the panels to nuzzle him. She was very insistent about meeting Rhys. I was amazed, she’s a sweety but not overly social with people.
She was so gentle that we decided to put the bareback pad on Winnie and take Rhys for a ride. I couldn’t believe how well he sat, he was perfectly balanced and sat like he’d been on a horse all his life. Winnie wasn’t bothered at all, she was very gentle and walked along quietly and allowed Rhys to take in the freedom riding a horse brings. We went for a long walk and he sat there, unaided the whole time. Even when we went up and down a steep enbankment he adjusted his body and balanced perfectly, far better than a lot of able bodied riders I have seen, let me add.
It was fabulous to see Rhys so happy, he was in his element and really enjoying the moment. I love, more then anything else, to see the smiles on the faces of people who have just been touched by a horse. We can, with the help of the horse, put such pleasure in the lives of others who are less fortunate then us, it really doesn’t take a lot and the rewards are precious.
That was today. Tomorrow is another story!

Every human should be touched by an animal, as they give so much unconditional love that humans do not always understand until it happens.
